The 2018-2019 FAFSA launches on October 1, 2017. 2018-2019 FAFSA applicants will be required to provide their 2016 tax year information on the form. The IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) is being reinstated for all 2018-2019 applicants. The new IRS DRT process is expected to enhance the privacy and security of applicant IRS tax return information by shielding tax info when it gets transferred to the FAFSA application. To protect student privacy, tax information transferred from the IRS into the FAFSA won’t be visible, but students will get a message confirming that the data was successfully transferred. FAFSA on the web will also begin requiring users to acknowledge and consent to monitoring while on the site in a move to protect against criminal activity and unauthorized use.
